CHICAGO– Conversation and libations flowed freely and equally inside the Park West on Chicago’s North Side following the appetizing musical selection from old-school hip-hop legends EPMD. The crowd was anxiously awaiting the delectable main course, which was about to be served in massive quantities She stood on stage poised more gracefully than ever before, as her hips swayed to the tempo of the drum. The melodic tone that the world fell in love with years ago delivered sweet feelings of nostalgia as she began to serenade the audience.
“Annie ain’t got no panties,” Badu sung seductively as the crowd roared its approval. The men bobbed their heads and the women snapped their fingers, anticipating the clever punch line to her opening verse. Then the beat dropped and Badu continued: “They’re in the bathroom stall where she took them off.” Cheers saturated the room and, in the first three minutes, of her performance it was confirmed: 10 years and three albums later, E. Badu still has her swagger.
