DECEMBER 28--After threatening legal action to protect her valuable name from an encroaching porn star, Mariah Carey yesterday filed a formal opposition to the bid by actress (and former California gubernatorial candidate) Mary Carey to trademark her stage name. In a notice filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the pop singer's company, Automatic Princess Holdings, argues that Mary Carey's bid to trademark her name for use in adult films, DVDs, cassettes, computer programs, and other commercial endeavors is likely to result in confusion for the consumer. The public, Mariah Carey contends, is "likely to mistakenly associate the goods offered" by Mary Carey--whose real name is Mary Cook--with the performer's "goods and services." Spike Lee will be directing the movie about the life of the late James Brown. The movie, which is funded by Paramount Pictures is set to begin filming in 2008. Brown died at 1.45am at Emory Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta after being admitted there over the weekend for treatment of severe pneumonia, his agent, Frank Copsidas, said.

The singer, also known as Mr Dynamite, is credited with bringing the word "funk." Brown's hit Say it Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud)

into mainstream musical vernacular and influencing a new generation of black music that spawned rap and hip-hop.

Goldman sues O.J. over book, TV deal monies

INDIANAPOLIS -- Fred Goldman sued O.J. Simpson on Tuesday, seeking any money the former NFL star received for a cancelled book deal and TV interview that told a hypothetical tale of how he would have killed his ex-wife and Goldman's son.

The federal lawsuit filed in California by Goldman's Indianapolis-based lawyer accuses Simpson of "fraudulent conveyance'' and alleges he created a shell corporation that received at least US$1.1 million as part of the TV interview and book, titled "If I Did It.

Goldman's lawsuit seeks about $1.1 million plus punitive damages, although Polak said he believes Simpson has already spent the money he received from News Corp.

Simpson would not say how much he was paid in advance, only that it was less than the $3.5 million reported. He said the money already has been spent, some of it on tax obligations. I saw this on CNN today. While I was sitting around flipping through cable and eating left over Chinese food, complaining about life, I felt very guilty for being selfish in my way of thinking, spending, and living. Christmas is around the corner, and I pray that families who celebrate this event will always remember to be thankful throughout the year and the rest to come. We talk about poverty in America and how we should focus on our own country. We complain about how our socio-econimic system is out of whack. We talk down on Oprah on why it is that she "only" helps the poor Africans. What about us? Well, what about us? There is no doubt that people are in need in America and yes our socio-economic system has had a turn for the worst, but have you ever contemplated eating rats for dinner? Not because you liked it as a delicacy, but because you had no choice. No, I think not and probably never will. I have been living in New York for over a year, and the homeless live and eat better than many of the working class. While we stress, continue to gain weight, and try to decide whether or not to purchase organic food, how about we look at the bigger picture? OUR PEOPLE ARE EATING RATS TO SURVIVE! We have the ability, do you have the will?

Tamiko Nash is (NOT) Miss USA!


Well it's official folks, Tamiko Nash is now the new Miss USA and she is one of the oldest Miss USA at 27 years old in the 55 year pageant history. Oh well, that's too bad for Tara who was dethroned on her 21st birthday for acting "inappropriately" in a New York night club and consuming alcohol underage (and according to ny post, she also tested positive for cocaine, uh huh, that's right.)

Nash's assumption of the Miss USA title marks only the second time in the pageant's history that a reigning Miss USA was forced to relinquish her title. In 1957, Miss USA was dethroned after it was discovered she was a married mother of two -- Mrs. USA is an entirely different pageant. (source)

Word on the street is that Nash has been seeing actor Brian White who co-starred in the movies "The Family Stone" and "Mr. 3000" (as the arrogant and cocky yet sexy baseball player)-Of course Nash's representative denies that they are a couple and claims that they are "just friends". (In my opinion, Brian is handsome guy, he looks short though, but I guess that's not a problem if you like that kind of stuff)

Taye Diggs Gets No Love


Last week, Taye Diggs’ TV series “Daybreak,” was cancelled due to low ratings. Rumor has it that African-American women refused to support the series because Diggs’ love interest wasn’t black. Their lack of support was instrumental in the numbers being down and the show getting the boot.

He did an interview with Rolling Out magazine last month to talk about his situation with his lack of black female support. Here is snippet of what he had to say when asked about his white wife:

“I’m too far along in my life and in my career to really give a question like that any type of dignified answer,” says Diggs, who was raised in black, middle-class Rochester, N.Y., intones. “When I was in high school, maybe. College, maybe. But I’m a grown-ass man and if people have a difficult time dealing with that, then I welcome them to see a movie with Omar Epps or Denzel Washington or some of those other brothers that have chosen to spend the rest of their lives with sisters, as you say. I just don’t have time for it. You can’t make everybody happy. And for the fans that are out there that are into me; they don’t really give a f— what’s going on with my personal life.” [SOURCE]

As women of color, do we really have time to care about Taye Diggs' Career? There are so many black men and women dating out of the race that Tay is just another out of the tens of thousands. Don't get me wrong, he helped get Stella's grove back, him and Sanaa made a great love story in Brown Sugar and The Best Man, but after these releases, all of his other ventures seemed uninteresting. He pretty much typecasted himself into the role of every black woman's "fantasy man", and because of black women's support of his past movies, that character made him a celebrity in the black community. Now his viewer-ship has wained because the show was not compelling, like a Grey's Anatomy, and it seems that the people who supported him in the past are not being represented in his work. His television series, Day Break, features him with a non-black love interest, and supposedly black viewers are not supporting it.
I believe Diggs's problem is that he never made a strong presence to white viewers, like a Will Smith or a Denzel. In film, if you've done a movie as the same character more than three times and it happens to be a "black film", society, both white and black, can get tunnel visioned. People are used to seeing his love interest as a Nia Long or Sanaa Lathan character. Take a look at Terrence Howard, his ex-wife was Jewish. He has been seen in public with this woman and he has professed his love in the past for her. Has he lost his black audience? No. He was up for an academy award for Hustle and Flow, which happens to be a very well written movie based on "hood" life in Memphis. Despite the critics, every African American cheered him on. He has not lost his audience because he plays roles that many black moviegoers like to see. He knows his audience and he cares about how they view him as an actor. No one cared about his relationship with his ex-wife. I am sure that Taye Diggs cares about how all audiences view him whether black or white, but should he care more about his roles as a black actor to a black audience? The answer is yes and no. No, because he is an actor who happens to be black. He should be able to creatively use his thespian skills with whomever love interest, regardless of color. But Taye should also very much care about how he is viewed to a black audience, because in reality people of color do care. Especially women of color. In a society where women of color are viewed as finger snapping, rump shaking hotties, it can cause a problem for black fans when there is a lack of representation. It's a sensitive subject, but it's reality.

The parishes plan to place themselves under Archbishop Peter Akinola of Nigeria, who calls the acceptance of gay relationships a "satanic attack" on the church.

The Episcopal Church, the U.S. wing of global Anglicanism, has been under pressure from traditionalists at home and abroad since the 2003 consecration of the first openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire.

Most overseas Anglicans believe gay relationships violate Scripture and contend liberal interpretation of the Bible should not be accepted.

I'm going to play a little devil's advocate here. The bible was written by at least 40 different authors from a variety of cultures over a period of at least 1500 years, yet it has the common theme of God's love and practical concern for world running through it. The Bible has provided values, social relationships and moral meaning because it was written on the basis of our family and social being.
Are we full of contradiction by showing unfair treatment against the Gays?
They have a right to a religion.

Who are we to judge, especially if they are good people?
Do you think gay relationships violate Scripture?

Do they chose to be gay? I don't think so.

Ali was extremely conscious of his legacy -- he was, after all, "the greatest" and "shook up the world." And he wasn't ever concerned about his verbiage making it into poetry books.

* The Bell shooting shares troubling similarities to the death of unarmed African immigrant Amadou Diallo, who died on his doorstep in the Bronx after being fired at 41 times by undercover New York City Police officers in 1999. Despite these wrongful deaths and increased complaints to the Civilian Complaint Review Board, there has been no substantive reform in the practices of the NYPD.
* In light of these horrific and unresolved shootings, we demand the immediate review of the practices of the New York City Police Department by the New York City Council and the New York State Legislature.

First runner up Tamiko Nash, Miss California is reported to be up next for the Miss USA crown since the current Miss USA, Tara Conner has violated her reign by repeatedly acting inappropriately (or, acting like a little hussy in other words) in New York nightclubs. Even though Donald Trump publicly announced that Tara will not be dethroned, a source told TMZ that the Miss USA organization contacted Tamiko regarding her taking the title and will soon come up with a final decision soon.
