I remember when Xscape came out. This was around the "light-skinnded/good hair" era, and in every group there was the cute light skinned girl. Well, my favorite singer was Candi. I never cared for Tiny and her whiny voice. I always looked for the cute light "skinnded" chic in girl groups and Tiny didn't do it for me.
Moving on to T.I. and Tiny:
This might sound bad, but remember that old saying about how there is always one person in the couple that can make or break the cuteness? Well T.I. is obviously a heart breaker for a skinny ni***@ (yeah I said it), but Tiny was never a good look for him. I don't care how many babies they have or how great the relationship is, she's not the dime that you expect from T.I.




















I need to figure out what Ananda was doing back in the day so when I get to be her age I can maintain that beauty that she has. She still looks fresh and young.

Rap Lyrics Cleanup

New York hip-hop record producer Russell Simmons says educating up-and-coming talents is one way to smooth some of the rough edges on their lyrics. (The sports community used this same approach with up-and coming professional sports players) That's a thought. What about stiff penalties also? For every N word 2million dollars a pop.

It took Imus to realize the difference in rapping and being a poetic really means. If we don't respect our woman, mother, sister our friends, why do we expect anybody else too?


We have been trying to convey this message for years about rap lyrics. "It's about dam time"
It's true we are the only group of people who degrade our women, calling them gold diggers, whores, and bitches. (But all along we are strong, educated, independent and supporting to our men) I feel there are a lot of men who are insecure with themselves and the only way the can feel empowered is to call woman Bitch and whores. If we support and feel it's ok to call our women these names, How can we be upset when another race feels it's ok? "Because it's only hip hop everyone is using it now" (Remember, small minded people, who don't venture out of their own world only know what they see and hear).

Simmons and other music industry executives met this week to discuss what might be done to end the crudity endemic in American society, and why rappers shouldn't be held accountable any less than shock jock Don Imus was for his racist remarks about the Rutgers University women's basketball team.

He will be receiving a full athletic scholarship to play basketball for USC. He is the first nationally known hip-hop star to receive a full scholarship. That's what I'm talking about. Get that free education even though you can pay for the whole team's. He will do well.

Breaking News: Death Toll Rises to 31 at Virginia Tech Campus Shooting

Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the families that have been affected by this narcisistic rage that took place at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing at least 21 people in the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history. The gunman also was killed and some officials expected the death toll to be even higher given that several dozen others were also shot.
“Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions,” said Virginia Tech president Charles Steger. “The university is shocked and indeed horrified.”
The shootings spread panic and confusion on campus, with witnesses reporting students jumping out the windows of a classroom building to escape the gunfire. SWAT team members with helmets, flak jackets and assault rifles swarmed over the campus. Students and faculty members carried out some of the wounded themselves, without waiting for ambulances to arrive.
The university reported shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and continuing about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building.

Chrisete Michelle- you gotta love her!

Last Wednesday, April 11, 2007 I experienced live music at the Canal Room in NYC. I want to thank Mathew and the great folks at Muzic Theory for the hospitality. And, yes, I call this an experience. No, it was not my first time hearing live music however, it was my first time wanting to cry in a club after hearing Chrisete Michelle play the piano while singing a song called "Love is You" where she ever so eloquently personified love. (And, it was my first time having the lead singer of a band pull me on stage to sing his very, very sensual rendition of De'Angelo's "How does it feel"-but I digress, remind me to tell you more about that later). Now back to business...so I didn't really cry in the club, I just wanted to. In other words, I was absolutely impressed by Chrisete. This was my second time seeing her perform (I first saw her perform at the Nokia Theater-see previous post here) and I must say that I am now more convinced than ever that this girl is, for lack of a better word, the shit! Have you ever listened to a song and knew what the next word was going to be just because the lyrical content was predictable? Well, Chrisete is the complete opposite. This chick obviously has been doing her homework studying music and writing her ass off. I could go on and on about this chick so I'll try to keep this short. All I'm saying is that Chrisete is a force to be reckoned with. I urge you all to give her a chance once her first single comes out in a couple of weeks. Jay-Z's "Lost One" and the Nas "Can't Forget About You" did her some justice but not enough-she needs more than a hook of a song for you to really get the full experience, and yes, I call her voice an experience.
Oh, I almost forgot...the band that opened up for Chrisete was called Franklin Bridge. If I had to compare their sound to another band, I would say they were similar to Mint Condition. They are a 5 member band out of Philadelphia and they are damn good. The band members are Ray Ray, Wayne, Adam, Lil Darrell and lead singer Curt Chambers, who I now have a crush on (damn he sure can sing and play that guitar! all he needs is some tattoos and... oops I forgot y'all were there...) So the last song they performed was a cover of De'Angleo's "How Does it Feel". Apparently, the lead singer likes to pick a very, very attractive young lady out of the crowd and vocally seduce her when he performs this song. Well, with all that being said, I was that lucky lady that got pushed to the front of the crowd to the stage and had the pleasure of receiving this serenade. I was so embarrassed! Tight Jeans and Chains

So I went out with a fellow contributor to the Canal Room to check out Chrisette Michele's performance along with local artists, Franklin Bridge and Peter Hadar. I can say I had a great time. Shout out to Mathew at Muzic Theory for allowing us to check out the performances.

As we stood around for about an hour and a half before any artists performed, I began to check out the swagger and the lack there of around me. Usually when I go to events where the majority audience is urban, there is always an outfit that catches my eye. I usually start with the females just to see if I've missed out on anything in the style department as far as for my wardrobe. Nada! Not a damn chick impressed me. Not that every time you go out you have to look all jazzed up, but this is New York City baby! Everyone is forcing to make a statement some way or another. I'm thinking, "I know there's some wanna be actresses and models in the house". Nothing! After the let down from the ladies, I casually checked out the guys. It's funny because anytime I made eye-contact with some of the gentlemen, they gave me the sex eyes. You know:"I see you looking at me girl!"- No Boo! I'm checking out those tight ass True Religion jeans you're wearing. What's up with the hood boys wearing tight jeans along with the played out belt loop chain? The look is so tired and boring. What happened to baggy jeans?

With all that said, I did find three young men who I felt represented themselves very well. Here are great examples on how to effortlessly step out to a mellow event after work:

It doesn't take much to impress me when it comes to men's wear. The camel wool overcoat with the same color cardigan was what caught my eye. I love men who wear tailored wool coats!

My cousin Duncan (not really my cousin, we kind of resemble though) here looks like a distinguished gentleman all the way. This is a great example of how to wear a tie with jeans. Note: he did not expose the tie, he used it as an accessory to not take away from the relaxed look paired with the jeans. He even has the umbrella to top the look off. Prepared for the New York weather!


Jumz, was the first guy that caught my eye. I could tell that he was not a fashion savvy kind of guy, just by his laid back manner. Any other wanna- be- cool dresser would not have worn this short trench with a closed hoody. Which brings me to my next point: hoodies can look clean without wearing a damn blazer!

With his effete air, Browne has often played cynical characters or educated middle-class African Americans who are winning at the white man's game without sacrificing anything....

I loved him. He stood strong and powerful in any role he played.

Hip-Hop Presents Sa-Ra, The Hollywood Recordings

I am pretty damn excited about this group and I really don't know why. It's not like I have their record or I've witnessed a performance, but I have heard snippets from their myspace page. Myspace is a magical thing because those snippets I heard were indeed magical. Not to sound corny, but I feel that with all the lack-luster crap that's being pumped out of the radio I feel these guys deserve a chance to be heard.

A product of Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music Imprint, Sa-Ra, meaning "offspring of the most powerful energy in the universe" has captivated quite an audience from the likes of Dr. Dre to Jurassic 5. The Sa-Ra Trio, Om'Mas Keith, Taz Arnold, and Shafiq Husayn not only creates for the act of making music for the world but for the universe. Om'Mas says: "People have come to expect and associate Sa-Ra with that which is overtly male, sexual, and free. Anything that you're going to see will be free, colorful, majestic, grand, magic, spiritual--all of those are the terminologies that we associate with our brand."

I even tried to pirate some shit on limewire and I couldn't find anything, so this better be good. It might not save hip-hop in it's entirety, but it will bring the creativity that is missing back to the table.

I Know, Hip-Hop is Dead. But We Can Still Poke Fun at it!

So it's very apparent that anyone born before 1983 is aware that hip-hop is under a detrimental state right now. Every artist from Nas and Jay-Z, to more conscious artist like Mos Def and Talib Kweli have been ranting and raving about how "our" music has taken a turn for the worst. With the lack of originality and the "biting" of beats and lyrics, no matter what artist, hip-hop radio has turned into a modern day broken record.
Me and millions of others have gradually searched through the archives to find classic artists, such as Slick Rick, Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff, NWA, Public Enemy, De la Soul, Biggy, Jay-Z's (Reasonable Doubt), Ghetto Boys, Goodie Mob, etc. My fellow blogger at eclektic relaxation posted an interesting take on the future of hip-hop. Other than rambling about shit that we already know and feel, I found these images of Cameron's Rhyme Books from another fellow blogger at listentoleon. If you know anything about Dip-set, then you will understand how funny this is. I did not realize that these youngins' really feel that groups like Dipset represent real hip-hop.
Great Example: I was at my boyfriend's apt. listening to Slick Rick's "Hey Young World", and his little brother (age 14) goes "what the hell is that?". My first reaction was "what do you mean? what the hell is that? this is a classic". But I soon realized that he had no idea who Slick Rick was, which is understandable. But I tried to school him and he was not hearing it. I even reminded him of Snoop's version of "LaDi Da Di", and explained that it was Slick who was the originator, and the kid was like "Snoop aint' shit either". His favorite rapper is Camron' by the way. I was left dumbfounded. So I just wanted to shit on Dipset for tainting the minds of the youth for posing as "real" hip-hop.

For Southerners Only: Remember This

Some friends and I were reminiscing about the good ole' days. We talked about how we would eat fried snickers, penny candy, licking sugar cool aid, selling candy at school, etc. The list went on. So I decided to mention pickles and every one was with me until I said "ya'll remember sticking candy in the middle of the pickle". There was a silence as if I said something crazy like, remember eating boogers. I'm like yeah "We used to stick Now and Later's in our pickles, it gave that sweet and sour taste". I later mentioned how we used to argue over the "booty" of the pickle. They were dying laughing after that one. I thought it was universal in all 1980's black society. I guess only in H-town!
